On Sunday, I made a big batch of food to take to work for the coming weeks. Specifically, I made 12 Sausage Egg Biscuits for breakfast purposes, and 10 burritos for lunch purposes. The breakdown:
Biscuits: Bisquick and milk, approximately 50 cents; sausage, $3; 10 eggs, about $1. Total, $4.50, or 38 cents per biscuit.
Burritos: Tortillas, [...]
Our Target recently became a SuperTarget, and I have been shopping there for groceries a time or two. My theory was that they have generally cheaper base prices on most things, but that their sales aren’t as good, since their loss leaders tend to be non-grocery items. Also, they don’t double (or triple, or Super [...]
I’ve got a friend who wants to get started couponing, so on Saturday we went to Harris Teeter together. She lives in the city and doesn’t have a car, so she usually walks to the Safeway; I drove, so we had our choice of supermarket. We picked HT.
I’m embarrassed to report that I haven’t been grocery shopping — real, planned, coupon-organized grocery shopping — in two weeks. In my defense, we haven’t needed anything, and the sales have just not been impressive. Also we’ve been busy with the holidays. However, we have bought things since December 13, and because we are cheap, [...]
Believe it or not, I sometimes surface from my coupon organizer long enough to make friends, or at least people who find me odd but somehow endearing, like the axolotl. Two of them recently found themselves with burning questions about couponing, and luckily I was there to put out the fire. Or something.
There is definitely some strategy involved in couponing. You have to know approximately what your household buys and approximately how often you buy it. You have to know what’s a “stocking up” price as opposed to what’s a “good deal” price. For me, there are generally three categories of groceries:
(I tried to work the word “bother” into the title of this one, but I couldn’t come up with a clever way to make it fit.)
Here, I’m going to show you a few examples of what you can get and for how much. In the future, I hope to have many triumphant, better-lit photos of [...]
OK, so here’s what you do:
Step 1. Clip coupons. I get them in the Sunday paper, but you can also order them from sites like The Coupon Clippers and The Coupon Master. I’ll do this sometimes if there’s a really good coupon for something I know I’m going to buy a lot of. [...]
Here’s the thing: You’ve got to buy food. In a meeting at work today, I accidentally described food as a “fairly necessary” purchase, and people laughed at me. They were right to laugh at me, because food is just plain not optional. Whoever you are, you gotta buy it. So it makes sense to buy [...]
ALL RIGHT WHOOOO LET’S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD!
Um, sorry. What I meant is, hello. My name is Janie Jones (OK, it’s not really, but let’s pretend it is). I’m 29 years old. I live in Alexandria, Virginia, right across the river from D.C., with my husband and our cat. Most importantly, I am [...]
