Shopping Trip: Harris Teeter, 12/2/09

I ran up to Rite Aid tonight to try to take advantage of a deal, but I failed. They were having Olay products at buy one, get one 50% off, plus I had coupons, plus Olay is offering a $20 rebate on $50 this month, plus Rite Aid has this “Holiday Gift of Savings” thing where if you register and enter your receipts online they’ll give you a certain amount back on a certain amount purchased. All in all, I thought I could get $60 worth of Olay stuff for about $20 out of pocket, which sounded good.

Sadly, though, it all went terribly wrong. Everything rang up more expensively than it should have, my coupons didn’t scan — well, they scanned, the amount just didn’t come off the total — and all in all it was an epic fail. So I apologized a hundred times and declined to complete my purchase. The guy behind the counter didn’t care at all, but I still hate it when I have to do that.

Rite Aid is in the same shopping center as Harris Teeter, and so I went in there to use some Sargento coupons, as it is buy one, get one free this week and you can only use three coupons per day. While there, I figured I might as well buy the other stuff I knew was a good deal. Here are the results:

This is so American! Milk! Cheese! RED MEAT!

Details:

  • Angel Soft, 12 double rolls, regular $7.45, sale $5.99, minus doubled coupon for 50 cents off = $4.99
  • Aquarius bottled water (not pictured), 24 bottles, regular $7.59, sale $1.99
  • Angus roast, $7.59 (this was supposed to be half off, but oh well; $7.59 is still not a bad price for a delicious piece of cow)
  • Angus sirloin steaks, $2.64
  • Boneless chicken breast, sale buy one get two free (!) (in other words, regular $4.99/pound, sale $1.66/pound); three packages at $2.67, $2.59 and $2.79 each
  • Cherry Garcia, regular $4.49, sale $3.50 (for the husband, who had a bad day; I don’t care what anyone says, Ben & Jerry will cure an ill)
  • Birds Eye Corn and Bacon in Cheese Sauce (let’s take all the nutritional value right out of corn!), regular $2, sale $1, minus doubled coupon for 50 cents off = free
  • Sargento cheese, six bags, regular $3.79 each, sale buy one get one free, minus three tripled coupons for 50 cents off two = $8.07, or $1.35 each
  • Milk, regular $3.49, sale $2.47

There’s other stuff we need, or at least should get, but it’s not on sale at Harris Teeter or Giant and I don’t even want to think about Shoppers, which didn’t even send around a circular this week, and all in all I think I will cave and just go to Target. I’ve got a coupon for $5 off $75 at Target and I can get everything I need there and their prices are good and I’ve got coupons for everything and hopefully they’ll have sales on some of it. Some weeks the deals come together like magic, but I just don’t think this is one of them. Also it’s dark and cold and rainy and the lure of One-Stop Shopping is strong.

Anyway, my out of pocket at HT was $39.62, with a savings of $41.44, or 51 percent. Acceptable!
