It’s been a few days of cheap, good eating here at Casa Jones.
First, let me extol the joys of Greek yogurt with blackberries. Blackberries were on sale at Giant for 99 cents, and I still have some of the Greek yogurt I got at 65 cents a container; I’ve been mixing maybe 10 blackberries with [...]
I don’t think this quite qualifies as gumbo, because it doesn’t have seafood or sausage or celery or a real roux or whatever. But it’s gumbo-esque. At least, it contains okra, which gumbo also does, traditionally. So there’s that. But you know what?
I hope this picture of Gumbo-Type Thing simmering in our awesome, gift-from-my-dad Scanpan [...]
Next time, I might add something to the filling — this time I used thyme and garlic powder, but I don’t think it was quite enough.
Still, this was really good — it was from the Better Homes & Gardens recipe book, tweaked slightly to accommodate what we had on hand, and it was very [...]
My final Triple Coupons trip:
I now have enough Planters nut bars to last through the apocalypse and beyond, but what can I say? They’re delicious, not unhealthy, and FIVE OF THEM COST A QUARTER. Who could say no?
The details:
My Triple Coupons trip to Harris Teeter today brought me unexpected bounty in the form of very cheap boneless pork ribs. As Mr. Jones had class tonight, I thought I’d buy some and cook myself something crazy and exotic that he’d never eat. Hence: Sweet and Sour Pork. (Yes, Mr. Jones is a very, very [...]
Would you believe these things were basically free.
Well, THEY WERE.
On Sunday, I made a big batch of food to take to work for the coming weeks. Specifically, I made 12 Sausage Egg Biscuits for breakfast purposes, and 10 burritos for lunch purposes. The breakdown:
Biscuits: Bisquick and milk, approximately 50 cents; sausage, $3; 10 eggs, about $1. Total, $4.50, or 38 cents per biscuit.
Burritos: Tortillas, [...]
So I was left with extra rice after I made curry, and of course I didn’t want to waste it. Luckily, I’d just gotten some frozen stir-fry mix on sale today — green, red and yellow peppers and onions — and we had some chicken breasts. I was going to do sweet and sour, but [...]
I thought it might be time for a break from my delicious standby, the burrito. I love the burrito; he is a staple of my gastronomical life. If I had to run away with one food product, the burrito might be it. Popcorn would come in a close second, but it doesn’t really have any [...]
Look at these!
I’ve made these once before, and they’re amazing for work breakfasts. They freeze well, and you just take one out, wrap it in a paper towel, nuke it for a minute and 15 seconds or so, and shake some Sriracha on there. Voila: Heaven with your coffee! Recipe inside.
